Metaplasia
Definition: transformation of one mature differentiated cell to another kind of the same category. It is a reversible process describing the adaptive substitution of more sensitive cell to another more resistance kind of cell to withstand the adverse environment. It is precancerous

i. Epithelial metaplasia
a. Squamous metaplasia in bilharzial cystitis
b. Intestinal metaplasia of gastric mucosa in peptic ulcer
ii. Mesenchymal metaplasia
a. Ossification of necrotic muscle in localized myositis ossificans
iii. Serosal metaplasia
a) endometriosis
iv. Tumor metaplasia
